Beloved Sanctuary Vervet Monkey Billie Dies at 19 After Decades of Healing and Nurturing Others

Billie, a female vervet monkey who became a symbol of resilience and compassion at a primate sanctuary, passed away peacefully at age 19 after battling age-related health issues. Her journey from trauma to sanctuary matriarch illustrates both the devastating impact of the illegal pet trade and the remarkable healing power of proper care and community. Rescued in 2014 from a hoarding situation in Pennsylvania where she was kept in a dog crate under deplorable conditions, Billie found new life among her own species. At the sanctuary, she formed deep bonds with fellow vervets, particularly an elderly companion named Bouf, with whom she spent peaceful hours grooming and socializing until Bouf's death in 2023. Perhaps most remarkably, Billie became a nurturing figure for traumatized newcomers, helping them overcome their past suffering through her patient, gentle presence. One of the most touching examples of Billie's maternal nature occurred in 2021 when a young monkey named Willis arrived at the sanctuary. Despite his somewhat overwhelming affection, Billie accepted the role with characteristic grace. As Billie aged, losing mobility and sight in one eye, her fellow monkeys continued to care for her just as she had cared for them.
