Beloved Vervet Monkey Billie Passes Away After 12 Years of Sanctuary Life

Billie, a female vervet monkey who spent over a decade at the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary, passed away peacefully in early 2026 after living a remarkable life of healing and companionship. Her journey began in 2014 when she was rescued from a hoarding situation in Pennsylvania, where she had been confined to a dog crate in deplorable conditions. At the sanctuary, Billie transformed from a traumatized captive into a gentle matriarch who helped countless other rescued primates heal from their own difficult pasts. Her closest bond was with Bouf, an elderly vervet monkey who remained her constant companion until passing in 2023. The pair spent countless hours grooming and enjoying each other's company in the peaceful sanctuary environment. Billie's nurturing nature made her a beacon of comfort for newcomers arriving at the facility. When Willis, a young monkey, was introduced to her enclosure in 2021, he immediately ran to Billie and embraced her tightly, seemingly recognizing the maternal figure he desperately needed. Despite his sometimes overwhelming affection, Billie patiently accepted his attachment with characteristic grace. Throughout her 12 years at the sanctuary, Billie found joy in simple pleasures: cooling off under misters during hot summer days, foraging for fresh vegetation, and grooming with friends like Charles as they aged together. Even as her health declined and she lost sight in one eye, her companions continued to care for her. When age-related health issues became insurmountable, sanctuary staff made the compassionate decision to prevent further suffering, allowing Billie to pass peacefully surrounded by love.
