Scottish Communities Fund Electric Van to Boost Whale and Dolphin Conservation Outreach
Local residents across Scotland have made a tangible impact on marine conservation by voting to fund a new electric vehicle for whale and dolphin protection efforts. The Scottish Dolphin Centre successfully secured funding through the Scottish government's Just Transition Participatory Budgeting Fund, which allocated £1 million to community-chosen environmental projects.
Thousands of voters in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, and Moray participated in selecting which eco-friendly initiatives would receive support from the participatory budget. The winning projects spanned renewable energy installations, low-carbon transportation solutions, energy-efficient community buildings, and environmental protection programs—all demonstrating grassroots commitment to Scotland's transition toward net-zero emissions.
The newly funded electric van will significantly expand the Centre's educational and conservation reach throughout the region. Along with beach cleaning equipment also purchased through the funding, the vehicle will support expanded education programs, conservation initiatives, and Shorewatch marine monitoring activities. These programs are crucial for raising awareness about the remarkable nature of whales and dolphins, while highlighting the daily threats these marine mammals face from human activities, pollution, and climate change.
The democratic funding approach showcases how communities can directly contribute to wildlife conservation efforts. By choosing to support marine mammal protection through their votes, local residents have enabled conservationists to take their message about ocean health and cetacean protection to more schools, communities, and coastal areas across Scotland's extensive shoreline.
